The New York Police Department has stepped up their patrol against cyclists in the area and have had a record-breaking number of summonses so far this year.
In 2011, the NYPD has issued 13,843 tickets to cyclists, which is up from 9,345 that were given during the same period of time in 2009. The ticketed offenses include speeding, running a stop sign, running red lights, biking on sidewalks, hanging tote bags and not wearing a helmet.
The controversy with the citations has occurred because all of these ticketed offense are not actual violations in New York City. A class action lawsuit is now being sought for those who were ticketed wrongly.
