Posted on June 3rd, 2011 No Comments

A jury has settled a class action lawsuit against Google for $8.5 million. The lawsuit was brought on by 31 million Gmail users who sued Google for giving out their personal information.

The personal  information was shared through a feature called Google Buzz.  A little over $6 million  will be split between fourteen privacy groups and the bulk of the money will go to American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The original lawsuit stated that the feature revealed sensitive information like the name of doctor’s patients. The Gmail users claimed that Google signed them up without telling them.

The U.S. Supreme Court has recently ruled that companies are allowed to enforce contracts that state that people can not join together to file class action lawsuits against them.

The court examined a class action filed by a California couple after they were charged too much in sales tax on their AT&T phone bill.

The contract stated that a class action against the company was not allowed, but the state of California said that contact was illegal. However, the Supreme Court said that it was not and in fact the class action suit was blocked.

Posted on March 8th, 2011 No Comments

A new class action lawsuit has been filed against the makers of the alcoholic beverage ‘Four Loko.’ The company, Phusion projects have been accused of deceiving consumers with the dangerous mix of caffeine, alcohol and other stimulants.

In the case that was filed in California last week, the lawsuit states that the beverage misled consumers about how dangerous it was by packaging it with bright colors.

In November, the FDA sent out a warning to the company for the amount of young people that were sent to the hospital after drinking a Four Loko. Each Four Loko can has the equivalent of four to five beers and one cup of coffee.

The lawsuit states that the product violated consumer protection law and committed fraud and they are seeking damages that include a refund to everyone that purchased a Four Loko in the last four years.
