Google Buzz class action lawsuit settled

A jury has settled a class action lawsuit against Google for $8.5 million. The lawsuit was brought on by 31 million Gmail users who sued Google for giving out their personal information.

The personal  information was shared through a feature called Google Buzz.  A little over $6 million  will be split between fourteen privacy groups and the bulk of the money will go to American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The original lawsuit stated that the feature revealed sensitive information like the name of doctor’s patients. The Gmail users claimed that Google signed them up without telling them.

Apple customer files lawsuit over privacy concern

A New York man has recently filed a class action lawsuit against Apple and two app developers claiming that they violated privacy rights.

According to the lawsuit, the man claims that the app developers were tracking his movements through his iPhone in order to sell them to advertisers.

The lawsuit alleges that Pandora Media and Backflip Studios use iPad and iPhones to record a users locations throughout the day and sell the information to third party advertisers. The man claims that this is trespassing on his personal property.

Sony faces $1 billion class action suit

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Sony and it is estimated that the cost could be near $1 billion or more.

Those involved in the lawsuit, mainly gamers, are claiming that Sony allowed hackers to get credit card information from their databases and it is said that nearly 120 million users had their information compromised.

Although Sony was not involved in the hack, some claim that they are responsible for holding the user information.

Apple involved in class action lawsuit over apps

A federal class action lawsuit has been filed against Apple by parents who claim Apple got kids to purchase Apps by claiming that they were free and then charging for upgrades and level-ups.

A woman in Philadelphia claims that her daughter racked up nearly $200 in a few days by playing games on her iPod Touch.

The lawsuit names three applications as examples, City Story’s virtual cash, Sundae Maker’s virtual ice cream and Tap Fish’s “fish bucks.” Representation for the plaintiffs state that the in-app purchases are “bait and switch” that trick kids to continue to spend more money.

Class action lawsuit targets maker of ‘Four Loko’ drink

A new class action lawsuit has been filed against the makers of the alcoholic beverage ‘Four Loko.’ The company, Phusion projects have been accused of deceiving consumers with the dangerous mix of caffeine, alcohol and other stimulants.

In the case that was filed in California last week, the lawsuit states that the beverage misled consumers about how dangerous it was by packaging it with bright colors.

In November, the FDA sent out a warning to the company for the amount of young people that were sent to the hospital after drinking a Four Loko. Each Four Loko can has the equivalent of four to five beers and one cup of coffee.

The lawsuit states that the product violated consumer protection law and committed fraud and they are seeking damages that include a refund to everyone that purchased a Four Loko in the last four years.

GameStop in the middle of class action suit

GameStop has recently been involved in a class action lawsuit after they were accused of storing customer’s personal information without telling them.

The complaint filed states that the company acquires personal information such as the physical address of the cardholder.

This information is found by pairing the cardholder’s Personal Identification Information with the name obtained on the card.

The suit states that the company is obtaining much more information about you just when you swipe your card to make a purchase. The suit also states that the information is of great benefit to GameStop.

AT&T settles mobile internet class action lawsuit

AT&T has settled a class action lawsuit that was filed against them after it was found that people were being charged taxes for using mobile internet.

People that have iPhones, Blackberries and other smartphones received a text messaged stating they were going to receive a refund for charges they were taxed from November 1, 2005 to September 7, 2010.

The lawsuit was settled after it was found out that AT&T had violated the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act which prohibits state and local governments from charging people with taxes for internet use between November 2003 and November 2014.
