Whistleblowers and False Claims Act
Private firms in a wide variety of fields are granted trillions of dollars of governmental money every year to provide a myriad of services and goods. Unfortunately, due to the sheer amount of money involved, fraud can be rampant. That is why Congress passed the False Claims Act, which rewards whistleblowers with 15 to 30 percent of what the government recovers from fraudulent contractors.
At Feazell & Tighe, LLP, we have an extensive history of helping people with the legal aspects of whistleblowing. To discuss the particular circumstances of your case with one of our dedicated lawyers, contact us today by calling 877-508-0588.
The False Claims Act
Every year, contractor fraud costs taxpayers billions of dollars. Fraud can come in a variety of forms, most frequently:
- False or inflated billings
- Production and delivery of inferior products
- Incentives paid to doctors and HMOs by drug companies
- Bid rigging
- Price fixing
In order to combat these high levels of fraud, the United States government enacted the False Claims Act, which rewards between 15 and 30 percent of recovered money to whistleblowers who alert the authorities to this fraud – even if the whistleblower is in part guilty for the fraud. This incentive is aimed at encouraging people to come forward about fraud, and to compensate them for the repercussions doing so could have on their jobs and families.
